Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) Guide
Quick summary
Schiphol is a single terminal split into Departure Halls 1, 2, and 3, so most transfers stay airside without re-clearing security. The train station sits directly beneath Schiphol Plaza, putting you in Amsterdam Centraal in under 20 minutes.
Terminals at AMS
Schiphol is technically one large terminal divided into three Departure Halls (1, 2, and 3) that all feed off the central Schiphol Plaza. From there, passengers fan out to interconnected piers B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and M: Hall 1 leads to piers B and C, Hall 2 to piers D and E, and Hall 3 to piers F, G (intercontinental) plus H and M (low-cost). Because it is one terminal, the four departure lounges are connected airside — Lounge 1 handles Schengen (European) flights, Lounges 2 and 3 serve intercontinental non-Schengen departures, and Lounge 4 covers budget carriers. Pier D famously has an upper level for non-Schengen and a lower level for Schengen. The key thing to know: transfers are mostly airside and easy, but moving between the Schengen and non-Schengen zones means passing a passport control checkpoint.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport
Trains leave from the station directly under Schiphol Plaza and reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 15–20 minutes; a single second-class ticket runs roughly €6–7 (buy from NS machines or use a contactless OV-pay tap-in/tap-out). Trains also run direct to Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and beyond. Buses (including the 397 Amsterdam Express) depart from in front of Schiphol Plaza. Taxis queue outside the Plaza with metered fares, and rideshare (Uber/Bolt) uses designated pickup points — confirm the current pickup zone in the app, as it can change. Kiss & Ride drop-off is at P1 opposite the terminal.

🛋️ Lounges
The flagships are the two KLM Crown Lounges — Crown Lounge 52 in the non-Schengen zone (with sleep cabins, a quiet area, showers, and dining) and Crown Lounge 25 in the Schengen zone (buffet, work areas, showers). Aspire Lounges operate in both Schengen and non-Schengen areas and are the main Priority Pass / pay-at-the-door option; paid walk-in access is generally around €65 per person, cheaper if pre-booked. SkyTeam and partner-airline lounges are also present. Access is zone-specific, so pick a lounge on the correct side of passport control for your flight.
📶 Wi-Fi
Schiphol offers free, unlimited Wi-Fi throughout the airport — connect to the 'Airport_Free_Wifi' network with no time limit.
😴 Layovers & overnight
Schiphol stays open overnight, making it one of Europe's more comfortable long-layover airports. Airside amenities include the Rijksmuseum Schiphol art annex, the Airport Library, a meditation centre, relaxation seats, showers, and plenty of dining. For real rest, YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol sits airside in Lounge 2 with cabins bookable by the hour or overnight (single cabins start around €52 for four hours and roughly €97 overnight). Landside, the Mercure and Sheraton hotels are a short walk or shuttle away. Note that Schiphol enforces a nightly closure window in some landside areas, so an airside cabin is the safest overnight bet.
