Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) Guide
Quick summary
Haneda is Tokyo's close-in airport, far nearer the city than Narita. Terminals 1 and 2 handle mostly domestic flights while Terminal 3 is the international hub, all linked by the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail plus free inter-terminal shuttles.
Terminals at HND
Haneda has three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is used mainly by Japan Airlines (JAL) domestic flights, Terminal 2 by All Nippon Airways (ANA) domestic and some ANA international flights, and Terminal 3 is the main international terminal for most foreign carriers. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected underground and on foot, while Terminal 3 is reached via the Keikyu Line, the Tokyo Monorail, or free shuttle buses that circulate between all three terminals (a few minutes' ride). The train and monorail platforms sit on the basement/lower levels of each terminal. Because Haneda is compact and well-signed, transfers are quick, but international-to-domestic connections still require you to change terminals, so allow a comfortable buffer and re-check-in time.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport
Two rail lines reach central Tokyo directly. The Keikyu Airport Line runs to Shinagawa in about 15-20 minutes for roughly ¥330, connecting into the JR network and continuing through to the Toei Asakusa subway line for Asakusa and beyond. The Tokyo Monorail links all three terminals to Hamamatsucho (JR Yamanote Line) in about 15-20 minutes for roughly ¥520. Airport Limousine buses serve major hotels and districts (about ¥1,000-1,400). Taxis to central Tokyo run roughly ¥6,000-8,000 and take 25-40 minutes depending on traffic - far cheaper and faster than from Narita. Ride-hailing via Uber and GO is available at designated stands, and a flat-fare taxi scheme applies to some central wards.

🛋️ Lounges
Terminal 3 (international) has JAL Sakura Lounges, ANA Lounges, Cathay Pacific and other airline lounges for eligible premium and alliance passengers, plus TIAT Lounge and Sky Lounge card lounges open to Priority Pass, eligible credit cards and pay-in guests. Terminals 1 and 2 have their own domestic-side airline lounges (JAL and ANA) and Power Lounge card lounges. Card and pay-per-use lounges typically offer drinks, snacks, showers and quiet seating.
📶 Wi-Fi
Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available across all terminals via the 'HANEDA-FREE-WIFI' network - connect and you're online with no strict time limit, though available services vary slightly by terminal.
😴 Layovers & overnight
Haneda is a pleasant place to wait, with strong Japanese food, shopping and observation decks. Terminal 3 has the Edo Koji zone recreating an old-Tokyo streetscape with restaurants and shops, a rooftop observation deck, and a Planetarium Starry Cafe. All three terminals have open-air observation decks for plane spotting. For rest, the airside 'first' cabin-style capsule hotel and the landside Royal Park Hotel The Haneda (connected to Terminal 3) let you sleep between flights, and Haneda has several nap rooms, shower rooms and quiet lounges. Because trains to central Tokyo are so quick and cheap, a layover of 6+ hours is enough to pop into the city for a meal.
Insider tips
- Confirm your terminal: international flights use Terminal 3, JAL domestic is Terminal 1, ANA domestic is Terminal 2 - free shuttles and the monorail link all three.
- The Keikyu Line to Shinagawa (~¥330) is often cheaper and faster than the monorail; use whichever matches your onward route.
- Tap through with a Suica or PASMO IC card (or Apple/Google Wallet) instead of buying paper tickets.
- Haneda is far closer to central Tokyo than Narita - a taxi is only ~¥6,000-8,000 and even a short layover can fit a city meal.
- Terminal 3's Edo Koji dining street and rooftop observation deck are great free ways to kill time before an international flight.
