Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) Guide
Quick summary
Barcelona's airport has two terminals, T1 and T2, that are NOT within walking distance — a free shuttle bus links them in about 10 minutes, so leave buffer time for transfers. The Metro L9 Sud reaches both terminals directly for €5.15.
Terminals at BCN
Barcelona-El Prat (officially Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat) has two passenger terminals. T1 is the large, modern main terminal handling most full-service and long-haul carriers, including Vueling, Iberia, and the major Star Alliance/oneworld/SkyTeam members. T2 (subdivided into T2B and T2C) is older and mostly serves low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet. The two terminals are about 4 km apart and are connected 24 hours a day by a free shuttle bus that runs roughly every 6–7 minutes and takes about 10–15 minutes. There is no airside transfer between T1 and T2, so if you connect between them you must exit, ride the shuttle, and re-clear security. Always allow at least 60–90 minutes for a terminal-change connection.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport
Metro Line L9 Sud connects both T1 and T2 to the city for a €5.15 airport fare (standard T-casual/Hola BCN travel cards do NOT cover the airport zone without the supplement), reaching central metro interchanges in about 30–35 minutes. The Rodalies R2 Nord commuter train is cheaper at around €4.90 and runs directly to Barcelona-Sants and Passeig de Gràcia in about 20–25 minutes, but it only stops at T2 — from T1 you must first take the free inter-terminal shuttle. The Aerobús express coach (A1 from T1, A2 from T2) runs to Plaça Catalunya in 30–40 minutes and costs about €7.25 one-way (€12.50 return). Official white-and-yellow taxis wait outside both terminals; a metered ride to the center runs roughly €35–40 including the fixed airport supplement. Uber, Bolt, Cabify and FreeNow operate legally with designated pickup points.

🛋️ Lounges
The main lounges are in T1: Sala VIP Pau Casals (Schengen departures side) and Sala VIP Miró (non-Schengen departures side), both operated by Aena and both accessible on Priority Pass, LoungeKey, Amex Platinum, and pay-per-use. They offer hot and cold buffets, drinks, showers, Wi-Fi, and newspapers, with access limited to three hours before departure and no arrivals access. T2 has more limited lounge options. Iberia operates its own premium lounges in T1 for business-class and elite passengers.
📶 Wi-Fi
Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout both terminals under the 'Airport Free Wifi' / Aena WiFi network — connect via the captive portal with no time cap. Coverage is generally fast and reliable.
😴 Layovers & overnight
For a long layover, T1 is far more comfortable than T2, with a wider choice of restaurants, cafés, shops, showers (in the VIP lounges), and quiet seating on the upper levels. There is no airside connection between T1 and T2, so plan to stay in whichever terminal your flights use. The airport does not officially encourage overnight sleeping, and services wind down overnight, but T1 has 24-hour landside areas where travellers do sleep. For a proper rest, the on-site or nearby airport hotels (such as those a short shuttle or taxi ride away in El Prat) are the safer bet; there are no in-terminal transit hotels.
Insider tips
- T1 and T2 are NOT walkable — always use the free shuttle bus and allow 60+ minutes when connecting between them.
- Buy the €5.15 Metro L9 airport ticket at the machine; a normal T-casual card won't work at the airport barrier.
- The Rodalies R2 train is cheaper and faster to Sants but only serves T2.
- Reserve long-stay parking online in advance — the drive-up rate is roughly 40% higher.
- Barcelona is a pickpocketing hotspot: keep bags zipped and close on the airport train and metro.
BCN airport — FAQ
How do I get from Barcelona Airport to the city center?
The fastest cheap options are Metro L9 Sud (€5.15, ~30 min, from both terminals) and the Rodalies R2 train (~€4.90, ~20 min to Sants, T2 only). The Aerobús coach runs to Plaça Catalunya for about €7.25. A taxi to the center costs roughly €35–40.
How much is parking at Barcelona Airport?
Short-term General parking is about €3.30 for an hour up to a €20.95 daily maximum. Long-stay parking is about €14 per day if you reserve online (around €47–50 for a week), or about €20.95 per day if you just drive up.
How do I get between T1 and T2 at Barcelona?
Take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus, which runs 24/7 roughly every 6–7 minutes and takes about 10–15 minutes. The terminals are about 4 km apart with no airside connection, so allow at least an hour for a terminal-change transfer.
Is Wi-Fi free at Barcelona Airport?
Yes. Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available in both terminals via the 'Airport Free Wifi' network — just accept the terms on the captive portal, with no time limit.
Which terminal is better for a long layover at Barcelona?
T1. It has far more restaurants, shops, quiet seating, and the two main VIP lounges (Pau Casals and Miró). T2 is smaller and geared to low-cost flights, so if you have a choice, spend a long wait in T1.
