Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) Guide
Quick summary
Malaysia's main gateway, split between the premium KLIA Terminal 1 and the low-cost KLIA2 (Terminal 2), the global hub for AirAsia. The KLIA Ekspres train links both terminals to KL Sentral in under 30 minutes.
Terminals at KUL
KLIA has two terminals about 2 km apart. Terminal 1 (KLIA) is the older, full-service terminal used by Malaysia Airlines and most legacy carriers; its gates split between a Main Terminal Building and a Satellite Building reached by the fully rebuilt New Aerotrain, an automated shuttle that runs the trip in about 2.5 minutes. Terminal 2 (KLIA2) opened in 2014 as a purpose-built low-cost terminal and is the primary hub for the AirAsia group; it is fused with a large shopping mall, Gateway@klia2, so expect a long indoor walk to some gates. The two terminals are connected by the KLIA Ekspres train (about 3 minutes, RM 2) and by a free shuttle bus, but they are not the same building β leave plenty of time if you're transferring between a Terminal 1 and a KLIA2 flight, since it means changing terminals entirely.
KUL parking rates & options
| Terminal 1 short-term β per hour | About RM 5 per hour (first 3 hours) |
| Terminal 1 short-term β per day | About RM 52 per day (max) |
| KLIA2 Gateway β per day | About RM 52 per day (max) |

π Getting to & from the airport
The KLIA Ekspres is the fastest way to the city, running nonstop from both terminals to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes (from Terminal 1) for roughly RM 55 one-way, departing about every 20 minutes. The slower KLIA Transit makes intermediate stops and takes around 39 minutes from KLIA2. For taxis, use the coupon counters in the arrivals hall β you prepay a fixed fare by zone rather than using a meter. Grab (rideshare) is popular and usually cheaper than a coupon taxi; the app directs you to a specific pickup door (typically on Level 1/Level 3 at Terminal 1, or the designated area at KLIA2). Airport coaches to KL Sentral are the budget option at around RM 15.

ποΈ Lounges
Plaza Premium Lounge operates at both terminals and is open to any traveler on a walk-in or Priority Pass basis (paid access from around RM 180 for a few hours). Malaysia Airlines' Golden Lounge in the Terminal 1 Satellite Building serves business-class and Oneworld Sapphire/Emerald passengers, with a hot Malaysian buffet, showers and runway views. KLIA2 also has Plaza Premium and several contract lounges near the main airside concourse.
πΆ Wi-Fi
Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout both terminals β connect to the 'klia free wifi' network with no registration and no time limit. Speeds typically run around 5β15 Mbps.
π΄ Layovers & overnight
For a long or overnight layover, both terminals have transit hotels: the Sama-Sama Express hotels offer airside micro-rooms bookable by the block of hours, and the full-service Sama-Sama Hotel sits landside next to Terminal 1. KLIA2 has capsule-style sleep pods and 24-hour food and shops within Gateway@klia2. If you plan to leave and re-enter, budget at least 5.5β6 hours to cover the train, immigration and re-check-in. Airside seating with power is plentiful, but the air-conditioning is strong, so bring a layer.
Insider tips
- Terminal 1 and KLIA2 are separate buildings β allow time for the train or shuttle when transferring.
- Book KLIA Ekspres tickets online in advance for a discount over the counter price.
- Prefer Grab over coupon taxis; it's usually cheaper and the app shows your exact pickup door.
- Connect to 'klia free wifi' β it's unlimited with no sign-up.
- If flying AirAsia, confirm you're heading to KLIA2, not Terminal 1.
