Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Guide

Updated July 2026

Quick summary

A consistently top-rated Pacific gateway on Sea Island in Richmond, just outside Vancouver. The Canada Line SkyTrain connects it to downtown in about 25 minutes.

Terminals at YVR

Vancouver International runs from a single connected main terminal building split into three concourse areas: the Domestic Terminal (Piers B and C) for flights within Canada, the International Terminal (Pier D) for overseas flights, and the Transborder area (Pier E) for U.S.-bound flights, where passengers clear U.S. preclearance before boarding. The concourses are linked airside, so most connections don't require re-clearing security, though international-to-domestic arrivals must collect bags and pass customs. The Canada Line station, parking, and the Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel all sit at the same central terminal complex.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport

The Canada Line SkyTrain is the easiest way downtown, reaching Waterfront Station in about 25–26 minutes with trains every 6–10 minutes. Note the YVR Airport AddFare: a trip starting at the airport costs a regular fare plus the AddFare surcharge (about C$10–12 total to downtown as of July 2026), though buying a stored-value Compass Card or day pass can reduce it. Taxis use zone-based flat rates to most destinations (roughly C$35–45 to downtown), and rideshare (Uber/Lyft) picks up on level 2 of the parkade.

🛋️ Lounges

YVR has Plaza Premium Lounges in both the Domestic and U.S. (Transborder) departures areas, open to Priority Pass members and pay-at-the-door guests. The International Concourse (Pier D) has the SkyTeam Lounge near Gate 53, and Air Canada operates Maple Leaf Lounges for International and U.S. departures. Most independent lounges admit walk-ins for a fee if you aren't a member or eligible passenger.

📶 Wi-Fi

Free, unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport — connect to the "YVR Free WiFi" network. There is no time limit.

😴 Layovers & overnight

YVR is a comfortable place for a layover, with a famous Pacific Northwest design, aquariums, and totem-pole art displays throughout. For overnight stays, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport is located inside the main terminal above U.S. Departures and offers day-use rooms — a quick indoor walk from arrivals. Landside seating and dining are limited overnight since parts of the terminal close, so a lounge or the hotel is the best bet for a long wait. U.S.-bound travelers should arrive early to allow time for U.S. preclearance.

Insider tips

  • Take the Canada Line SkyTrain downtown — it's far cheaper than a taxi and avoids bridge traffic.
  • Budget for the YVR Airport AddFare surcharge on SkyTrain trips leaving the airport.
  • Buy a Compass Card or day pass to soften the AddFare if you'll ride transit more than once.
  • The Fairmont hotel is inside the terminal — ideal for an overnight without leaving security-side comfort.
  • For U.S. flights, arrive early to clear U.S. preclearance before your gate.
