Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Guide

Updated July 2026

Quick summary

One of the world's busiest and best-connected hubs on Chek Lap Kok island, anchored by the vast Terminal 1. The Airport Express train reaches Central in about 24 minutes, and the SkyPier ferry links transit passengers straight to mainland China and Macau.

Terminals at HKG

Hong Kong International Airport is built around Terminal 1, one of the largest terminal buildings in the world, handling the great majority of passenger flights including home carrier Cathay Pacific. Its long departures concourse is served by an Automated People Mover (APM) that carries you from the central check-in hall out to the more distant gates, plus a linked Skytrain/APM to satellite areas. From the airside APM you can also reach the SkyPier, a dedicated ferry terminal that lets transit passengers connect to Pearl River Delta ports (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan) and Macau without formally entering Hong Kong. Give yourself time for the APM ride to far gates, and note that some low-cost carriers use the separate Terminal 2 area for check-in while flights still depart from Terminal 1.

πŸš† Getting to & from the airport

The Airport Express (MTR) is the quickest route to town, reaching Hong Kong station in Central in about 24 minutes for HK$115 (HK$105 to Kowloon), running roughly every 10 minutes, with free porter and in-town check-in perks and free shuttle buses to major hotels at the city end. Taxis are color-coded by region: red urban taxis serve Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, green taxis the New Territories, and blue taxis Lantau β€” join the taxi queue outside arrivals and pay the metered fare plus tunnel tolls and a bridge/luggage surcharge. Airport buses (the 'A' Airbus and cheaper 'E' routes, plus 'N' night buses) reach the whole city and are the budget option. Rideshare exists but the Airport Express or taxi queue is usually simpler.

πŸ›‹οΈ Lounges

Cathay Pacific runs its flagship lounges here β€” The Pier (First and Business, near Gates 60–65) and The Wing (First and Business, above Gate 2) β€” both with showers, and The Pier First offering private day-suites. These are for Cathay/Oneworld premium and elite passengers. For pay-per-use or Priority Pass access, Plaza Premium operates several lounges spread along the concourse (including near Gate 1 and Gate 60) with shower facilities, and the American Express Centurion Lounge is available to eligible cardholders.

πŸ“Ά Wi-Fi

Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport under the '#HongKongAirport' network with no time limit. There are also free internet and device-charging stations across the terminal.

😴 Layovers & overnight

For a long or overnight layover, the Regal Airport Hotel connects directly to Terminal 1 by a covered walkway and offers day-use and 'transit' room packages, while the Marriott SkyCity is a short walk away. Airside, Plaza Premium and the airline lounges offer showers and rest, and the airport has quiet lounging zones with recliner-style seats. If you're sleeping in the terminal, the airside gate areas are calmer overnight than the public arrivals hall; the air-conditioning runs cold, so pack a layer. Transit passengers heading to mainland China can also use the SkyPier ferry without clearing immigration.

Insider tips

  • An Octopus card (or contactless card) covers the Airport Express, buses, MTR and even parking.
  • Allow time for the APM ride out to distant gates in Terminal 1.
  • Connecting to mainland China or Macau? Check if the SkyPier ferry lets you skip Hong Kong immigration.
