Istanbul Airport (IST) Guide

Updated July 2026

Quick summary

Istanbul Airport is one enormous single terminal and the global hub of Turkish Airlines, so nearly every transfer stays under one roof. The M11 metro reaches the city for about 40 TRY, while HAVAIST buses run 24/7 to Taksim and beyond.

Terminals at IST

Istanbul Airport (IST) is built as a single, vast terminal — one of the largest airport buildings in the world — handling all domestic and international flights under one roof. Because it is one terminal, transfers are almost entirely airside: connecting passengers follow the transfer signage without collecting bags or leaving security, and airport buggies help cover the long walking distances between gates. Turkish Airlines uses IST as its main global hub, so most connections are self-contained within the terminal. Duty-free, dining, and lounges are concentrated in the central airside area, with piers radiating outward to the gates. The scale is the main challenge — allow generous time to walk between distant gates.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport

The M11 metro connects Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe (where you can change to the M2 line for Taksim and the city center) in roughly 35 minutes; the fare is about 40 TRY and requires an İstanbulkart, which you tap in at the airport and tap out at your destination. Trains run roughly every 8–10 minutes from about 06:00 to midnight. HAVAIST airport buses run 24/7 to many districts (Taksim, Sultanahmet, Beylikdüzü, and the Asian side), with fares from around 200 TRY up to about 426 TRY depending on the route — HAVAIST also requires İstanbulkart, no cash. Official taxis queue outside arrivals (metered), and rideshare via BiTaksi/iTaksi is common.

🛋️ Lounges

The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge on the international departures floor is a destination in itself — open 24 hours with dining, showers, and private sleep suites for eligible passengers on longer layovers. For pay-per-use access open to any traveler regardless of airline or class, the IGA Lounge operates 24/7, with day passes around €115 per person (up to a 6-hour stay) and reduced-time entry for Priority Pass and Dragon Pass holders (about 3 hours). Additional CIP and contract lounges are available airside. Turkish Airlines' own premium lounges are generally reserved for its Business Class and Miles&Smiles elite passengers rather than paid walk-in.

📶 Wi-Fi

Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal — connect to the 'IGA Free WiFi' network.

😴 Layovers & overnight

Istanbul Airport is open 24 hours and is well equipped for long layovers thanks to its single-terminal design. The airside YOTEL Istanbul offers cabins bookable by the hour (Recharge Cabins for short stops, up to four hours) with a private bed, TV, desk, and shared showers; a landside YOTEL is also available for those clearing immigration. There is abundant 24-hour dining, quiet rest zones, showers, and a large duty-free area. Turkish Airlines also runs the TourIstanbul free city-tour program for eligible transit passengers with longer layovers. Because everything is under one roof, you can rest, eat, and reach your onward gate without ever changing terminals.

Insider tips

  • It's a single terminal but huge — allow plenty of time and use the airport buggies for distant gates.
  • Buy an İstanbulkart on arrival; both the M11 metro and HAVAIST buses refuse cash.
  • The M11 needs a change at Gayrettepe (to the M2) to reach Taksim and central Istanbul.
  • HAVAIST buses run 24/7 — your best bet if you land after the metro stops around midnight.
  • On a long Turkish Airlines layover, check eligibility for the free TourIstanbul city tour.
