Zurich Airport (ZRH) Guide

Updated July 2026

Quick summary

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland's largest airport and SWISS's hub, prized for its efficiency and a train station directly beneath the terminal that whisks you to Zürich Hauptbahnhof in about 10 minutes. Prices here are in Swiss francs (CHF).

Terminals at ZRH

ZRH is built around three gate areas — Docks A, B and E — all fed from the central Airside Center after security. Dock A serves Schengen flights, Dock B handles both Schengen and non-Schengen (its gates switch mode), and Dock E is for non-Schengen/intercontinental flights, reached from the Airside Center by the underground Skymetro people mover in about 2–3 minutes. Landside, three check-in areas (Check-in 1, 2, 3) sit above the Airport Center, which connects directly to the SBB train station and the Radisson Blu hotel.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport

The train station is directly under the terminal — one of ZRH's biggest advantages. SBB trains and S-Bahn lines (including S2 and S16) reach Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB) in about 10 minutes for roughly CHF 6.80 one-way, running every few minutes from early morning to midnight. Long-distance SBB trains also connect ZRH directly to cities like Bern, Basel, Lucerne and beyond without changing in the city. Trams and buses serve the region from the bus terminal on Level 1. Taxis and rideshare (Uber, Bolt) are available but pricey — expect roughly CHF 50–70 into central Zurich.

🛋️ Lounges

ZRH has strong lounge options: SWISS operates Senator and Business lounges (and a First Class Lounge) for eligible Star Alliance travelers, mostly around Docks A/E. For pay-in and Priority Pass access, the Aspire Lounge sits in the Airside Center between Docks A and B, with a second Aspire in the non-Schengen Dock E area; the Marhaba Lounge also offers timed pay-per-use passes. Most non-premium travelers use Aspire or Priority Pass.

📶 Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi ("Zurich Airport") is available landside and airside. It's typically offered for up to about 4 hours after you connect via SMS code or your boarding pass.

😴 Layovers & overnight

For a layover, the Airside Center is the heart of ZRH — a bright shopping and dining hall linking Docks A and B, with a good spread of Swiss food, watches and chocolate. Showers and quiet corners exist, though ZRH isn't a 24-hour party airport, so nights are calm. The Radisson Blu Hotel is connected directly to the terminal via the Airport Center (about a 2-minute indoor walk), making it the easiest overnight option. With a few free hours and Schengen entry, the 10-minute train into Zürich HB makes a quick city visit realistic.

Insider tips

  • The SBB station is right under the terminal — for almost any Swiss destination, take the train rather than a taxi.
  • Dock E flights (intercontinental/non-Schengen) need the Skymetro; budget a few extra minutes to reach the gate.
  • Switzerland is not in the EU for customs — watch duty-free allowances, though it is in the Schengen passport zone.
  • Free airport Wi-Fi caps at around 4 hours; the Radisson Blu or lounges offer longer sessions if you need more.
  • Prices are in CHF and Switzerland is expensive — a coffee airside can top CHF 5, so plan accordingly.
