Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) Guide
Quick summary
Bangkok's primary international gateway, built around one huge main terminal plus the newer SAT-1 satellite. Don't confuse it with Don Mueang (DMK), the city's older low-cost airport across town.
Terminals at BKK
Suvarnabhumi has a single main passenger terminal with a departures hall on Level 4 and arrivals on Level 2. Gates fan out along concourses A through G (with a D/E immigration split), and the newer SAT-1 satellite terminal adds 28 gates (S101–S128), including eight that can handle the A380. SAT-1 has no direct walkway — you reach it from the center of the main terminal via a driverless Automated People Mover (APM) that runs through a 1 km underground tunnel in about 3.5 minutes, so allow extra time if your flight departs from an S-gate. Note that Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is a completely different airport from Don Mueang (DMK); DMK is Bangkok's older low-cost hub (AirAsia, Nok Air, Lion Air) roughly an hour away by road, so double-check which airport your ticket says before you travel.

🚆 Getting to & from the airport
The Airport Rail Link (ARL) City Line is the fastest, cheapest way into town: trains run from the basement level (B1) to Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes for around 45 THB, connecting to the BTS Skytrain there, roughly every 10–15 minutes from about 05:30 to midnight. You can now tap a contactless credit card at the gate as well as buy tokens. Public metered taxis queue at the curb on Level 1 (grab a ticket from the machine); expect a 50 THB airport surcharge plus tolls on top of the meter. Grab (rideshare) works well and has a dedicated pickup area — it's often the simplest option late at night when you'd rather not haggle.

🛋️ Lounges
As of April 2025, Airports of Thailand pulled most airline lounges out of membership programs, so Priority Pass access at BKK now centers on the contract operators — Miracle Lounge (multiple locations, including Concourse A/D/F) and The Coral Executive Lounge. Airline lounges such as Thai Airways Royal Silk/Royal Orchid, Qatar Airways, Oman Air and Turkish are now restricted to those airlines' premium and elite passengers. Most contract lounges sit airside near the main concourses with showers and hot Thai food.
📶 Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is available airport-wide under the AOT / Suvarnabhumi network; connect through the captive portal. Basic free access is time-limited (roughly two hours), and additional free vouchers are available at information counters if you need more.
😴 Layovers & overnight
For a long or overnight layover, the only true airside hotel is the Miracle Transit Hotel on Concourse A, with private day rooms and showers you can book without clearing immigration — reserve ahead for overnight stays. Landside, the Novotel Suvarnabhumi is a short covered walk from the terminal and offers day-use rooms plus a free shuttle, and the Hyatt Regency is nearby too. If you're sleeping in the terminal, the quieter airside spots are along the upper-level concourses; the public landside areas can be bright and busy all night, so bring an eye mask and layers for the strong air-conditioning.
Insider tips
- Confirm whether your flight leaves from a main-terminal gate or SAT-1 — the APM ride adds 10–15 minutes.
- Use the Airport Rail Link over a taxi at rush hour; road traffic into central Bangkok can take well over an hour.
- Only take metered public taxis from the official Level 1 queue — ignore drivers touting fixed fares inside.
- Double-check BKK vs DMK on your ticket; the two Bangkok airports are far apart.
- Carry small baht notes for the taxi surcharge, tolls and the rail-link ticket machines.
