Sydney Airport (SYD) Guide
Quick summary
Sydney Kingsford Smith is Australia's busiest airport, split into a separate international precinct (T1) and domestic precinct (T2/T3) that are about 4 km apart. The Airport Link train and a complimentary T-Bus connect the two, and a station access fee applies to every train trip.
Terminals at SYD
Sydney has two physically separate precincts. Terminal 1 (T1) handles all international flights and sits on the western side of the runways. Terminals 2 and 3 (T2/T3) form the domestic precinct on the eastern side - T3 is Qantas' dedicated domestic terminal and T2 serves Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Rex and other domestic carriers. The two precincts are roughly 4 km apart, so you cannot walk between them. To transfer, take the Airport Link train (about 2 minutes between the International and Domestic stations, but you pay a station access fee at each end) or the complimentary T-Bus terminal transfer coach, which runs every 15 minutes from around 05:30 to 22:30 and takes about 10 minutes. Always allow a generous connection window when switching between international and domestic flights, since you re-clear security and may need to collect and re-check bags.

π Getting to & from the airport
The Airport Link train is the fastest way into the city: trains run from stations directly beneath both the International (T1) and Domestic (T2/T3) terminals and reach Central Station in about 13 minutes. Note that a station access fee is added on top of the normal Opal fare - the adult gate pass is around A$18-19 (slightly cheaper when you tap on with an Opal card or contactless payment). Taxis, rideshare (Uber, Ola, DiDi) and hire cars use designated ranks and pick-up zones at each terminal; expect roughly A$45-60 to the CBD depending on traffic and time of day. Public buses and pre-booked shuttle vans also serve the airport for a lower fare.

ποΈ Lounges
Terminal 1 (international) has the widest choice. Qantas operates its flagship First Lounge and an International Business Lounge (a new business lounge is being built for a 2027 opening, with a temporary lounge running in the meantime) after Customs on the mezzanine level. The American Express Centurion Lounge welcomes eligible Amex Platinum and Centurion cardholders, and the SkyTeam Lounge near Gate 24 (operated by Plaza Premium) serves SkyTeam premium and Star-Alliance-adjacent flyers plus pay-per-use guests via Priority Pass. Airlines such as Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and others run their own lounges in T1. The domestic precinct (T2/T3) has Qantas and Virgin Australia lounges for their own frequent flyers.
πΆ Wi-Fi
Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available across the terminals - at T1 International connect to the '-FREE SYD WiFi-' network, accept the terms and you're online with no strict time cap.
π΄ Layovers & overnight
Sydney is not a classic 24-hour airport for overnighting: T1 International largely closes overnight because of the night curfew (no scheduled flights roughly 23:00-06:00), so you may be moved out of the airside area and the terminal can feel deserted. For an overnight, the Rydges Sydney Airport hotel sits directly opposite T1 International (with T-Bus links to the domestic terminals and day-use rooms), and budget options like Ibis Budget Sydney Airport are a short walk or shuttle from the domestic precinct. Airside amenities include cafes, showers in the pay lounges, and quiet seating, but there are no free sleep pods - bring a travel pillow and pick a bench near the food court. Because the two precincts are separate, don't count on moving airside between international and domestic overnight.
Insider tips
- Budget for the train station access fee - it adds roughly A$18-19 per adult on top of the normal Opal fare, so a taxi can be competitive for two or more travellers.
- International (T1) and domestic (T2/T3) are separate precincts about 4 km apart - use the free T-Bus or the train and leave at least 60-90 minutes to connect.
- For cheap parking, Blu Emu is the official long-term lot (about A$34 the first day) with a free 24/7 shuttle to the Domestic terminal only.
- Sydney has a strict overnight curfew, so T1 largely shuts down late at night - book the Rydges opposite T1 if you have an early or overnight gap.
- Tap on with an Opal card or contactless card rather than buying a paper ticket - it's slightly cheaper and faster through the gates.
SYD airport β FAQ
How do I get from Sydney Airport to the city center?
The Airport Link train runs from beneath both the international and domestic terminals to Central Station in about 13 minutes. Remember a station access fee (around A$18-19 for an adult) is added to the normal fare. Taxis and rideshare run roughly A$45-60 to the CBD depending on time of day.
How much is parking at Sydney Airport?
At-terminal short-term parking is about A$21 for the first hour and A$70 or more for a full day. For longer stays, the official Blu Emu long-term car park is far cheaper - around A$34 for the first day and about A$178 for a week - with a free 24/7 shuttle to the Domestic terminal.
How do I get between the international and domestic terminals at Sydney?
The two precincts are about 4 km apart, so you can't walk. Take the free T-Bus terminal transfer coach (every 15 minutes, roughly 05:30-22:30, about a 10-minute ride) or the Airport Link train (about 2 minutes, but you pay a station access fee at each end). Allow 60-90 minutes for connections.
Is Wi-Fi free at Sydney Airport?
Yes. Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminals - at T1 International just connect to the '-FREE SYD WiFi-' network and accept the terms, with no strict time limit.
Can I sleep overnight inside Sydney Airport?
It's not ideal. Because of the night curfew, T1 International largely closes overnight and you may be moved out of the airside area. For an overnight gap, book the Rydges hotel opposite T1 International or a budget hotel near the domestic precinct rather than sleeping on a bench.
